Bardcore, rockin’ like it’s the 1400s
Written by Heroes and Mortals on August 2, 2020
Bardcore, where musicians remake popular and classic songs in a (loosely) “Medieval” style is gaining quick popularity as of late. While the style has been around in various forms and related genres for quite a few years, a resurgence in 2020 is afoot, stepped off by YouTube artist Cornelius Link’s remake of Astronomia (Coffin Dance) in “Medieval Style”, then Foster the People’s Pumped Up Kicks and picked up by Bardcore star, YouTube artist Hildegard von Blingin’. The Guardian soon after published an article on Bardcore, and with time at home, a plethora of synths, digital and some real and even traditional instruments, artists are remaking everything from Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water, Dolly Parton’s Jolene to a personal favorite, Benny Goodman’s Sing, Sing, Sing. The question still remains though, was Martin Lawrence’s remake of Sly & The Family Stone’s Dance To The Music from the 2001 film The Black Knight, the original Bardcore?
