Joseph Campbell and The Grateful Dead

Written by on June 7, 2020

Joseph Campbell famously attended a Grateful Dead concert near the end of his life and commented about being reminded of Dionysian festivals. John Bucher, writing at the Joseph Campbell Foundation, briefly reviews some of Campbell’s takes on modern entertainment at the time and its drift away from the mythical and spiritual interests of ancient cultures into the historical and biographical interests of the 19th century. Much of what we play at Heroes and Mortals Radio is inspired by Campbell’s popularization of the hero’s journey, if you enjoy the stories associated with the music we play here and you are not familiar with Joseph Campbell, give him a read and read the full article at the Joseph Campbell Foundation blog, MythBlast.
